Boat Engine Overheated Now Won't Start
He sold it to me for $500. I recently bought a 2000 toyota mr2, 5 speed, with 61k miles.
Do that with all the cylinders one at a time and see if you get water squiring or leaking out of the plug well.

Depending on how long the engine was run after it overheated, there is a good chance that it is seized and you may have to consider a replacement. If not pull all the spark plugs and see if it will turn over then, watch for water leaving a cylinder. I have a 79 100hp johnson and i took it to the lake about a week ago and it ran fine for about ten minutes.
Also, he said there was smoke/steam coming out from that same side. Engine was running fine then it sounded different and the temperature gauge was pegged in the red. Thanks for your help and view.
Changins parts without troubleshooting first is stupid. You can buy a compression tester for about 25 buck. As another poster mentioned, with the ignition off, try and turn the engine by hand using the crankshaft bolt.
Overheated, stalled and now won't start!!! They are not professional grade but will do. It came back smoking and a temp of 220 degrees.
Outboard overheated, did i fry it??? If you do this carefully you shouldn’t damage the sealing gasket. Took the lower unit off and found that the impeller was melted and some of the water pump housing was also melted.
From what you have stated so far i would suggest to you to remove all the spark plugs and see if the starter will turn the engine over then. If the gasket tears, get a new one.
